Indian dinner

Living and working in Berau for the Conservancy brings color to my life. Every page offers a different experience, knowledge, consequence and consciousness as a living being. This what Syakh Hamza Yusuf said as our debt to our Lord the Almighty, the debt of consciousness. The feeling of indebtedness is what we call as Dien in Arabic. Islam itself is the state of Aslama, one of the meanings is surrender to the law of God and feeling of wholeness.

Every pulse of our blood, every beat of our heart, every blink of our eyes follows the law of nature. Our sensing, thinking, feeling and sensation indicate our living. These are our tools of consciousness. I always find these overwhelmed in terms of experiencing our only miraculous life.

I some time shared about this within my time with my gardening friend, Rumi Naito, who came over to my house for an Indian banquet. I say what makes gathering so delightful are good friends, good talks and home made food! So we started preparing from 4 pm to 7 pm with breaks for praying. We made ‘nan’ or thin Indian bread from wheat flour and yeast. And Indian karee with slices of carrots, potatoes, cabbage and stream beans…mm I love them.

After dinner we had hot milky tea that adds the flavor and relax conversation with friends. I remember one question from Uncle Teddy for Rumi in our talks. “Do you read any books before your coming to Indonesia?” asked Uncle. “I don’t put much detail about where I am going; I like to see something new, feel and relish in every new corner that surprise and amaze my self” said Rumi.

Rumi, I, you and all of us in the essence are a time traveler. We moved from our childhood to adulthood. We are always moving and never stay the same. But our modern mind dulls our sense. We become numb to what we look, hear and feel as we trap into the routine life. Our life goes into motion, we live in sleep walking mode.

So Rumi tells us to live with our conscious and ready for all the moments and surprises that await us. In this essence you are living in Aslama state. Bon Voyage!
